Another Great Time

Early on in the season a mate and I went for a look at the Shag River near where I live.  We were looking around and seeing the odd decent trout when we rounded a bend and I saw a very nice fish, we were standing on top of a very steep bank about 8 metres above the water, the river here is very smooth and quite slow moving.

I quickly got a cast out, nearly to the other side of the river which is probably ony 6 or 7 metres wide here, I cast about 3 metres upstream of the fish and waited for him to get closer… When he was a metre or so away I twitched the line and started stripping it in, the fish turned and followed, he stayed about half a metre back from the fly (an olive woolly bugger).  We were beginning to get close to the bank so I gave the line a much larger and faster pull.

It was incredible to watch… The fish powered forward and hammered the fly in the blink of an eye, the water was very clear and from our elevated position we could see very well, it was amazing how aggressively the fish hit the lure.

I struck and that was it I had 6 pounds of very pissed off brown trout on the end of my line… Now there is just the small problem of landing the fish, my mate was a good guy and shot down the bank and netted the fish for me.

During the next couple of hours I got broken off by a fish, I was using a 7lb tippet so it must have been a reasonable fish to do that and not long before heading for home I landed another trout, a lovely 5lb brown trout… A very pleasant night all round, my mate never even got a bite, guess it was all about me that time )
